English poet John Clare writes in his "
First Love ",
I ne'er was struck before that hour
With love so sudden and so sweet.
Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower
And stole my heart away complete.
My face turned pale as deadly pale,
My legs refused to walk away,
And when she looked ' what could I ail? '
My life and all seemed turned to clay.
Yes when I saw her, my life and all seemed
turned to CLAY !
Perhaps she never dreamt I love her. We're
so different,
live in so distant circumstances, our ages
so apart !
But this is one of the mysteries of human
life-I simply
cannot forget her. Even if I feel the urge
to cease my life,
I often rethink of it because, I think, as
far as I live she exists in
me. Even if she dies tomorrow, she'll continue
to live in my
heart and body as long as I'm alive.
